A Lesson In History

SEPTEMBER, 1940 (And NO I was not born then either, evil readers)

During World War II King George VI and his consort Queen Elizabeth were praised for their staunch resolve and morale-boosting visits to factories and war-battered cities.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- The Queen Mother was a rallying point for a beleaguered nation during World War II. She stood firm against the threat of invasion by Adolf Hitler's Third Reich and won the hearts and minds of the public by her wartime work and wit.

The Queen Mother and her husband, King George VI (The real King George), were ill prepared for the role thrust upon them by the abdication of Edward VIII only two years earlier; but when part of Buckingham Palace was bombed in September 1940 she felt she could relate to the suffering being endured by the country.

While surveying the damage she famously said: "I'm glad we have been bombed; I feel I can look the East End in the face." She had resisted calls for herself and her two teen-age daughters, Elizabeth (the present Queen Elizabeth II) and Margaret, to flee London for the safety of North America. "The children will not leave unless I do," various sources have reported her as saying. "I shall not leave unless their father does, and the king will not leave the country in any circumstances whatever."

The royal standard flew defiantly over the palace throughout the war, and the Queen Mother learned how to shoot a revolver, practising her aim in the palace gardens. The Queen Mother toured the country regularly, sharing in its woes, visiting badly damaged hospitals and factories, and keeping up the morale of the troops.

SEPTEMBER 2005

Meanwhile back at the ranch, King George the Pretender got a look at some of the damage as Air Force One descended to less than 3,000 feet over the hardest-hit area, particularly New Orleans. This was on Wednesday..... Three days after Hurricane Katrina devastated parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

First Lady Laura Bush visited the Cajun Dome (Lafayette, Louisiana) on Thursday shutting down the computer room for eight hours (along with the food service rooms to the side and the women's showers).

You may have seen it on CNN; apparently seven refugees were allowed back so Laura Bush could help them in from of the cameras. Now, I know this is the sort of thing that happens whenever a VIP tours a disaster site, and maybe Laura Bush handing out that loaf of bread really will lead to an increase in donations.

All I can say is, to have paralyzed a third of a day of operations at this stage of the game, it fucking well better. And I tried to position myself to say this to her in front of the television cameras too, but instead I only got a wave and a smile as she hurried past me. Looks like I'm going to have to become nationally infamous another day. (Written by Hal Law a volunteer at the Cajun Dome)

Gotcha!

It's 2:00 A. M. and I should be sleeping. I promised myself I'd take a mini-vacation from blogging this weekend. I spent a pleasant relaxing evening at my favorite neighborhood bar, the Pro Shop Pub. My friends Vinny and Tim were there as well as my favorite bartender, Steve.

The problem is, before I went out this evening, I made the mistake of reading another piece of garbage published by Agape Press.

Joining the "New Orleans is to blame for it's own woes" sentiment of
Michael Marcavage and others, yet another militantly anti-gay "leader" is now spewing his own wildly inappropriate thoughts. Agape Press quotes the Reverend Bill Shanks of New Orleans's New Covenant Fellowship Church as saying that hurricane Katrina has wiped out much of the rampant sin common to the city.

The pastor explains that for years he has warned people that unless Christians in New Orleans took a strong stand against such things as local abortion clinics, the yearly Mardi Gras celebrations, and the annual event known as "Southern Decadence" -- an annual six-day "gay pride" event scheduled to be hosted by the city this week -- God's judgment would be felt.

“New Orleans now is abortion free. New Orleans now is Mardi Gras free. New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion -- it's free of all of those things now," Shanks says.

"God simply, I believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there -- and now we're going to start over again." The New Orleans pastor is adamant. Christians, he says, need to confront sin. "It's time for us to stand up against wickedness so that God won't have to deal with that wickedness," he says.

Shanks heeded warnings to evacuate New Orleans, and is currently staying with friends in the Jackson, Mississippi, area.

This is what I have to say to Bill Shanks: First of all, why is your ass dry when you should be comforting the members of your congregation who have been displaced, are hungry, penniless or dead? You ran like a fool!

Secondly, and most importantly the survival of New Orleans before and after this horrific tragedy is dependent on TOURISM!

Tourism is the city’s most lucrative market. An estimated 10.1 million visitors came to New Orleans in 2004, with more than 1.4 million visiting for just a day. Total visitor spending amounted to $4.9 billion that year! Though many come to experience the food and music for which New Orleans is famous, many more come from around the world to participate in events celebrating all cultures.

I ask you this question, Bill...... how much of your money goes into the tax coffers of New Orleans and Louisiana? OOPS..... silly me. You're a benificiary of that "tax exempt" status! You don't contribute shit!

But after all of this is over, I am going to fight like hell to take that away from you.
Since religion is becoming more and more involved in the political arena, where is the "seperation of church and state"? It's time for the "tax exempt" status you so enjoy to END!

Now, another reminder Bill.......... and I have to repeat myself here.

READ CAREFULLY: The French Quarter, the heart of the Gay community in New Orleans, sustained minimal damage. Yep, that's right Bill. The Gay bars are still standing, and I for one will be enjoying life there as it once was. My Gay dollars will continue to flow into the tax coffers of New Orleans along with the millions of others who visit each year!

And by the way, Bill....... while you're freeloading in Jackson, Mississippi; sitting on your ass thinking about what hate to regurgitate; next I'm looking forward to going to New Orleans to volunteer in the relief effort! Am I going to see your bigoted ass there, Bill? Am I gonna see you handing out food and clothing to the hungry? Am I gonna see you embracing your parishoners and reminding them that this is a natural disaster and NOT the hand of God punishing New Orleans? How much of your tax-exempt dollars are you donating to the relief effort, Bill? Somehow, I see a big ZERO flash before my eyes!

OOPS...... and just one more thing, Bill. "God's judgement" as you call it seems to have been more focused on the "bible belt"! Yes Bill, the four states devastated by your "God's judgement" are all "bible belt" states. Maybe God is trying to tell YOU something. Stop spreading all this hate!

So let's stop the "blame game", shall we. This Natural Disaster affected not only Louisiana but also Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Let's concentrate on helping the hundreds of thousands of people affected by this devastating hurricane. Open your wallet, Bill. Mine is already empty!

Divine Intervention!

I promised myself I'd take a break from blogging this weekend but I just had to get one more word in!

I was reading some of the blogs written by visitors to my site this evening when once again, I stumbled upon blogs relating to two disturbing articles that were published this week.

The first, abortion clinics in New Orleans became the cause of Hurricane Katrina according to a group of fundamentalist christians.

The following day, An organization of christian fundamentalists claimed the destruction brought on by Hurricane Katrina was God's judgment against New Orleans for holding festivals like the annual gay Southern Decadence party.

"Although the loss of lives is deeply saddening, this act of God destroyed a wicked city," said Repent America director Michael Marcavage on the organization's Web site.

As I was reading all of this garbage, my PUG Muggs came to the side of my chair and standing on his hind legs, began tapping on my knee with his front paw to get my attention.

It was time to go outside to PP, but I only had one paragraph left to read so I lifted him to sit on my lap ... and then it happened.

Muggs whispered in my ear.... da da (my dogs call me da da), "God didn't bring this hurricane as punishment to New Orleans because of abortion clinics or gay related events." I was stunned when he continued: "God brought the hurricane because he's angry with the fundamentalist christians." Suddenly I remembered that all the southern states hit by Hurricane Katrina were "BIBLE BELT" states; but Muggs had more to say. "God Hates Hate", was his next comment before finally saying, "now can you please take Daisy and I outside to PP?"

"Of course, Muggs and an extra dog biscuit for you when we get back!

I checked several fundamentalist christian websites. None of them are asking for donations to help any of the "bible belt" states affected by Hurricane Katrina.

And a special note to Michael Marcavage: The French Quarter, where most of the GAY bars are located, received NO SIGNIFICANT damage and remains intact due to the fact that the French Quarter is located 5 feet above sea level! Sorry to disappoint you, Michael!

It's all so rediculous, isn't it? 'Example

When I blog in anger, I become an almost out of control warrior and preface those entries with warrior themed art to better express my mood at the moment. Today's warrior is in honor of the ladies on my blogmaster list.

It's unlikely that you'll find apple pie recipes on their blogs. These ladies are kind, considerate, and sensitive but they can also get angry as all hell! Check them out; but first, fasten your seat belt. You might be heading for the roller coaster ride of your life! 'Example
